Liverpool's man and van service

The easiest way to do a garage clear-out is to empty it in stages: sort everything into keep, sell or donate, recycle and dispose; set aside hazardous items like paint, chemicals and gas bottles to deal with separately; and then book a garage clearance for the bulky remainder. Doing it in that order saves time and makes sure nothing ends up in the wrong place.

This guide covers a simple sorting system, the items that need special handling, and what to expect if you book a garage clearance in Liverpool.

Plan your garage clear-out

Garages tend to fill up slowly over years, so clearing one often takes longer than people expect. A little planning helps:

  • Pick a dry day. You will need space outside to spread things out.
  • Wear gloves and sturdy shoes. Garages often hide sharp edges, broken glass and old nails.
  • Have bags, boxes and a marker pen ready.
  • Check the light works, or bring a torch for the back corners.
  • If the garage is shared or on a block with others, make sure you are only clearing your own things.

A simple sorting system

Mark out four zones on the drive or pavement, or use labelled boxes, and move every item into one of them. Try not to put anything back in the garage until the sort is finished.

  1. Keep – tools, bikes, garden equipment and anything you genuinely use. Be honest about the last time you used it.
  2. Sell or donate – working items in good condition, such as furniture, tools or sports equipment.
  3. Recycle – scrap metal, cardboard, wood and small electricals.
  4. Dispose – broken, rotten or unusable items, and general rubbish.

Keep a fifth pile, well away from the others, for anything hazardous. More on that below.

Hazardous items we cannot take

Garages are where most homes keep their hazardous waste. We cannot take the following, so they need to be set aside and dealt with separately:

  • Paint, including half-used tins
  • Chemicals such as weedkiller, solvents, cleaning products and car fluids
  • Gas bottles
  • Asbestos, which can be found in older garage roofs and panels

Merseyside’s household waste recycling centres accept some household hazardous items. What each site takes can vary and rules can change, so check the Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority website before you go. Keep chemicals in their original containers with the lids on, and never mix them.

If you suspect asbestos, do not try to break it up or move it yourself. Leave it in place and get specialist advice.

Tyres, fridges and other items with a separate cost

Some items are fine for us to take but carry a separate disposal cost because of how they have to be processed. In garages, the most common ones are:

  • Tyres
  • Old fridges and freezers
  • Mattresses

Let us know how many of these you have when you ask for a quote, and the cost will be included in the price we agree before booking. If you have an old sofa or armchair in the garage, mention that too, as Environment Agency rules mean waste upholstered seating must be kept separate and incinerated.

Booking a garage clearance in Liverpool

Once the sorting is done, what is left can usually go in a single visit. Send us photos of the garage on WhatsApp for a free quote. The price depends on how much space it takes in the van, the type of items, access and timing, and once agreed it does not change on the day. There is no callout charge.

A few things that help:

  • Tell us if the garage is in a rear lane or behind an alley gate, and arrange access.
  • Mention if the van will need to park on a permit-only or busy street.
  • Let us know if there is a loft, shed or garden waste to clear at the same time.

The driver does all the lifting and loading. We are a licensed waste carrier, recyclable material goes to a licensed waste transfer station, reusable items are passed on where possible, and we can provide disposal paperwork on request. Same-day collection is usually available, including evenings and weekends.

Garage clearances are part of our wider rubbish removal service in Liverpool, which covers every Liverpool postcode plus Huyton, Crosby, Maghull, Prescot, Widnes and St Helens.

Doing it yourself: what to know about the tip

If you would rather take the rubbish yourself, Merseyside has 14 recycling centres run by MRWA. Bear in mind that vans, pick-ups and trailers over 2m need a free permit, bulky waste needs a temporary permit (limited to 12 a year), and only household waste from your own home is accepted. If you hire a van, bring the hire paperwork. If you are weighing up options, our guide to man with a van vs skip hire may help.

Keeping the garage clear

Once it is empty, it is the perfect time to give the floor a sweep, check for damp or leaks, and put up shelving or hooks so things have a proper place. A quick sort every few months stops the clutter building up again.

FAQs

How long does a garage clearance take?

It depends on how full the garage is and how much sorting you do first. If you have already separated what you are keeping and removed hazardous items, the clearance itself is usually much quicker. Send us photos for a more accurate idea.

Can you take old paint and chemicals from my garage?

No, we cannot take paint, chemicals, gas bottles or asbestos. Merseyside recycling centres accept some household hazardous items, so check the Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority website for what your nearest site takes.

Do you take old tyres?

Yes, but tyres carry a separate disposal cost. Tell us how many you have when you ask for a quote so it is included in the agreed price.

Can I take garage rubbish to the tip myself in a van?

You can, but vans, pick-ups and trailers over 2m need a free permit from Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority, temporary permits for bulky waste are limited each year, and the waste must come from your own home.

If your garage needs clearing, send us a few photos on WhatsApp or call 07743 183272 for a free, fixed quote. You can find out more on our rubbish removal page.
