Liverpool's man and van service

For fridge disposal in Liverpool, the main routes are the free council bulky item collection (if the fridge has been cleaned out), a Merseyside recycling centre, a retailer take-back when a new appliance is delivered, or a private collection. Fridges and freezers contain refrigerants and insulation that have to be dealt with properly, so they should never be dumped or left in an alley.

This guide covers how to get the appliance ready, which option suits which situation, and what to expect from washing machines, cookers and other white goods too.

Why fridges and freezers need proper disposal

Fridges and freezers are not like a broken chair. The cooling system contains refrigerant gases, and the walls are packed with insulating foam. If they are crushed or broken up in the wrong place, those can escape. That is why they go to specialist treatment rather than in with general waste, and why reputable collectors keep them separate.

For you, it means two things. First, choose a route where the appliance ends up at a proper facility. Second, don’t attempt to cut pipes or strip parts out yourself to make it lighter.

How to prepare a fridge or freezer for collection

Whichever option you choose, preparation is much the same. The council specifically requires fridges to be cleaned out, and a clean, dry appliance is easier for anyone to move.

  1. Empty it. Use up or move the food a few days before.
  2. Switch off and defrost. Unplug it the day before if you can. Freezers with heavy ice can take many hours.
  3. Catch the water. Put towels or a tray down, and empty the drip tray if there is one.
  4. Clean and dry it. Wipe out the inside, including the shelves and door pockets.
  5. Secure loose parts. Tape shelves and drawers in place, or take them out, and tape the door shut.
  6. Check the route out. American-style fridge freezers often only just fit through kitchen doors. Measure the doorways, and check whether doors need removing.

Washing machines and dishwashers should be disconnected, drained and have their hoses tied up. Gas cookers must be disconnected safely by a Gas Safe registered engineer before anyone moves them.

Using the Liverpool City Council bulky collection for white goods

The Liverpool City Council bulky item collection, run with Bulky Bob’s, is free for Liverpool City Council residents. Fridges and freezers are accepted if they have been cleaned out. You can book up to 5 bulky items per property, plus up to 5 small electricals, such as kettles or microwaves, alongside a booked collection. Book through the Liverpool City Council website.

Remember that the appliance has to be outside on collection day, crews collect between 7.30am and 4.30pm when they are next in your area, they don’t have alley-gate keys, and items can be refused if they are too heavy to lift. Getting a full-height fridge freezer out of a kitchen and through a terraced house on your own is not easy, so plan who will help. Check the council site for current terms.

Taking a fridge to a Merseyside recycling centre

The 14 Merseyside household waste recycling centres provided by MRWA take white goods as bulky waste. If you bring them in a van, pick-up or trailer over 2m, you need a free temporary permit (maximum 12 a year). Hired vans need the hire paperwork with them. Details are on the MRWA website.

Only household waste from your own home is accepted, not trade waste. In a car, a small under-counter fridge may fit, but a tall fridge freezer generally needs a van and two people.

Retailer take-back when you buy a new appliance

If you are replacing an old fridge, washing machine or cooker, ask the retailer about take-back before you order. Many retailers offer to take the old appliance away when they deliver the new one, sometimes for a fee and sometimes with conditions, such as the old one being disconnected and ready by the door. Ask exactly what they need from you, as the delivery crew may not take it if it is still full of water or ice.

This is often the neatest option if the timing works. It is less helpful if the old appliance needs to go before the new one arrives, or if you are clearing a property and not replacing anything.

Booking a private fridge collection

We collect fridges, freezers and other white goods as part of our rubbish removal service in Liverpool. Fridges and freezers carry a separate disposal cost, which we include in the quote so you know the full price up front.

  • WhatsApp us a photo of the appliance and tell us where it is. A basement kitchen or upstairs flat affects the price.
  • The price is agreed before booking and doesn’t change on the day, with no callout charge.
  • The driver does the lifting and loading.
  • We’re a licensed waste carrier, and we can provide disposal paperwork on request.

Landlords and families emptying a whole property often have several appliances at once. In that case, our house clearance service can take the white goods with everything else.

Fridge disposal in Liverpool: which option suits you?

Council resident, can get it outside, not in a hurry Council bulky collection

Whoever you use, check they are on the register of waste carriers and get a receipt. An unregistered collector who dumps a fridge can leave you facing a fine.

FAQs

How long before collection should I switch off my fridge?

Ideally the day before, so it has time to defrost fully. Put towels down to catch the water, empty the drip tray, then wipe it out and leave the door slightly open so it doesn’t smell.

Will the council take a fridge in Liverpool?

Liverpool City Council’s bulky item collection with Bulky Bob’s accepts fridges and freezers as long as they have been cleaned out. It is free for council residents, and the appliance must be left outside on collection day. Check the current terms on liverpool.gov.uk.

Can I take a fridge to the tip in a van?

Yes. White goods count as bulky waste at Merseyside recycling centres. If you are using a van, pick-up or trailer over 2m, you need a free temporary permit from MRWA, and you get a maximum of 12 a year.

Can I lay a fridge on its side to move it?

It is generally better to keep a fridge upright, especially if it is going to be used again, and to secure the door closed. If it is going for disposal, the main concern is not damaging the cooling pipes and not letting leftover water leak in the vehicle.

If you want an old fridge, freezer or washing machine gone with a fixed price agreed up front, see our rubbish removal page or call 07743 183272.
