If you’re a Liverpool City Council resident with up to five items you can get outside yourself, and you don’t mind waiting, the council’s free bulky item collection in Liverpool is hard to beat. A private collection makes more sense when you need it gone quickly, have more than the council limit, can’t carry things outside, or live outside the council’s area. Here’s a fair look at both, so you can pick the right one for your situation.
How bulky item collection in Liverpool works
Liverpool City Council runs its bulky item collection with Bulky Bob’s, and you book it through liverpool.gov.uk. Based on the council’s published rules:
- It’s free for Liverpool City Council residents only.
- You can book up to five bulky items per property.
- Alongside a booked collection, you can also put out up to five small electricals and five bags of textiles.
- Items must be left outside on collection day.
- Collections take place between 7.30am and 4.30pm on the day the crew is next in your area, so you may have to wait.
- Fridges and freezers are accepted if they’ve been cleaned out.
- Damaged or torn upholstered items must be wrapped or taped.
- Crews don’t have alley-gate keys.
- Each flat books separately.
- Items can be refused if they’re infested or soiled, or too heavy to lift.
Council rules can change, so always check the latest details on the council website before booking.
When the council collection is the better choice
We’d be doing you a disservice if we pretended a private collection was always better. The council option is often the right call when:
- You live in the Liverpool City Council area and are eligible.
- You have five bulky items or fewer, plus perhaps a few small electricals or bags of clothes.
- You can get everything out to the front yourself, or have someone to help.
- You’re not in a rush and can wait until the crew is next in your area.
- You’re happy for items to sit outside on collection day.
If all of that fits, it’s free and it’s a sensible use of a service you already pay towards.
When a private bulky item collection makes more sense
A private collection fills the gaps the council service isn’t designed for. It’s usually the better fit when:
- You need it gone fast. We’re open 24 hours, seven days a week including bank holidays, and same-day collection is usually available, including evenings and weekends.
- You can’t get items outside. The driver does all the lifting and loading, including from upstairs rooms.
- You have more than five items, or a mix of furniture and general rubbish.
- Your items are behind an alley gate or in a back yard. Many Liverpool terraces have tight back yards and gated alleys, which the council crews can’t access with keys.
- You don’t want things left on the pavement, where they can get rained on, picked through or end up blocking the path.
- You live outside the council area. We cover every Liverpool postcode plus Huyton, Crosby, Maghull, Prescot, Widnes and St Helens.
- You’re a landlord clearing a rental and the council’s resident-only service doesn’t fit. Ask when you book.

Items to think about before you book either
A few items need a little extra thought whichever service you use:
- Sofas and armchairs. Environment Agency rules say waste upholstered domestic seating is likely to contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs) and must be incinerated rather than landfilled, recycled or reused unless shown to be POPs-free. That includes sofas, armchairs, upholstered dining chairs, office chairs, footstools, futons, bean bags and cushions. Mattresses aren’t in this category.
- Fridges and freezers. The council asks for them to be cleaned out. We can take them too, but they carry a separate disposal cost, as do mattresses and tyres.
- Damaged furniture. Torn upholstery needs wrapping or taping for the council collection.
- Hazardous items. We won’t take asbestos, chemicals, paint, gas bottles or clinical waste.
How to choose in four quick steps
- Check eligibility. Are you a Liverpool City Council resident? If not, the council service isn’t an option.
- Count your items. Five bulky items or fewer points towards the council; more points towards a private collection.
- Think about access. Can you get everything outside safely? If not, you’ll need someone to do the lifting.
- Check your deadline. If you’re moving out, handing back keys or have a delivery coming, waiting for the next council round may not work.
If you go private, check the collector is a registered waste carrier. Householders have a legal duty of care to make sure their waste goes to someone authorised. We’re a licensed waste carrier, and reusable furniture is passed on where possible.
FAQs
Is the Liverpool Council bulky item collection really free?
According to Liverpool City Council, it’s free for Liverpool City Council residents. Rules can change, so check the current details on liverpool.gov.uk before you book.
What time will Bulky Bob’s arrive?
Collections run between 7.30am and 4.30pm on the day the crew is next in your area, so you won’t get an exact time slot. Your items need to be outside on the collection day.
Can the council collect from inside my house?
The council service asks for items to be left outside. If you can’t move them yourself, a private collection where the driver does the lifting from inside may be the more practical option.
I live in a flat. Can my neighbours and I book one collection?
No. Under the council’s rules each flat books separately, so each household would need its own booking.
