Liverpool's man and van service

Decluttering before moving saves you money, time and space at the other end. Work room by room, sort everything into keep, sell, donate, recycle and rubbish, and give yourself a few weeks to sell and donate before the move. Whatever is left at the end can go in one collection, so you are not packing things you will only throw away later.

This guide walks through a simple room-by-room method and the main options for getting rid of things in Liverpool: selling online, donating, recycling centres, the council bulky collection and a final clear-out collection.

Why bother decluttering before moving?

Every item you move has to be wrapped, boxed, carried, loaded, unloaded and unpacked. Removal prices depend on how much goes in the van, so fewer things usually means a smaller, quicker move. It also means you are not filling your new cupboards with things you did not want in the old ones.

Decluttering before you pack is far easier than doing it afterwards. Once boxes are taped up and stacked in a new home, they tend to stay that way for months.

A room-by-room decluttering method

Tackling the whole house at once is overwhelming. One room at a time, with five clear categories, keeps it manageable.

  1. Start with the least-used space: the loft, spare room, garage or shed. These hold the most clutter and the fewest daily essentials.
  2. Set up five piles or boxes: keep, sell, donate, recycle and rubbish.
  3. Handle each item once: make a decision and put it in a pile. A “maybe” pile quickly becomes a second keep pile.
  4. Measure the new place: if a wardrobe or sofa will not fit through the new door or into the new room, it goes now, not on moving day.
  5. Finish each room before starting the next: clear the sell, donate and rubbish piles out of the room so you can see your progress.
  6. Leave the kitchen and bedrooms until last: you still need to live there until the move.

A useful question for each item: would I buy this again if I did not already own it? If the answer is no, it probably does not need to come with you.

Selling online

Furniture, electronics, bikes, baby equipment and branded items often sell well on local marketplace sites and apps. A few tips:

  • Start early. Items can take a week or two to sell, and buyers often want to collect at evenings or weekends.
  • Take clear photos in good light and give measurements for furniture.
  • Price realistically for a quick sale; you are trying to clear space, not make a profit.
  • Arrange collection only, and do not let buyers wander through the house unaccompanied.
  • Set a cut-off date. Anything unsold a week before the move moves to the donate or rubbish pile.

Donating: what charities will and will not take

Charity shops and furniture reuse charities welcome good-quality clothes, books, kitchenware, toys and furniture. Some offer free collection of larger items, though you may need to book well in advance.

Upholstered furniture such as sofas, armchairs and upholstered chairs usually needs its fire safety label still attached to be accepted. Without the label, most charities will turn it down. Check before you arrange a collection, and ring ahead about anything large.

Items that are broken, stained or damp are better recycled or disposed of. Charities spend money getting rid of donations they cannot sell.

Recycling centres

Merseyside has 14 household waste recycling centres run by the Merseyside Recycling and Waste Authority. They take a wide range of recyclables, electricals, garden waste and bulky items from your own home. If you are taking a van, a pick-up or a trailer over 2m, you need a permit, and bulky loads need a temporary permit, of which you can have a maximum of 12 a year. If you have hired a van, bring the hire paperwork. Check the current rules and apply on the MRWA website.

The council bulky collection

If you live in the Liverpool City Council area, the council’s bulky item collection, run with Bulky Bob’s, is free for up to 5 bulky items per property, plus up to 5 small electricals and 5 bags of textiles alongside a booked collection. It is worth knowing the limits before you rely on it for a move:

  • items must be left outside on collection day;
  • collections happen between 7.30am and 4.30pm on the day the crew is next in your area, so you may have to wait;
  • crews do not have alley-gate keys, and each flat has to book separately;
  • items can be refused if they are soiled, infested or too heavy to lift.

Book through liverpool.gov.uk and check the latest terms there, as they can change. Book well ahead of your moving date.

What is left: one collection for the rest

Most declutters end with a pile of things nobody wants to buy and charities will not take: broken furniture, old mattresses, worn-out carpets and bags of general rubbish. Rather than several tip runs in the busy week before a move, book one collection for the lot.

Our rubbish removal service takes mixed household items in one go, and the driver does all the lifting. Reusable furniture is passed on where possible, and recyclable material goes to a licensed waste transfer station. Mattresses and fridges can be taken for a separate disposal cost. If you also need help with the move itself, our house removals in Liverpool can be quoted alongside the clearance.

FAQs

How long before a move should I start decluttering?

Ideally four to six weeks. That gives you time to sell items online, arrange donation collections and book a council or private collection without a last-minute rush. Even one or two weekends of focused decluttering before moving makes a real difference.

Will charity shops take my sofa?

Many will take good-condition upholstered furniture, but usually only if it still has its fire safety label. Without the label, most charities cannot accept it. Ring ahead and check before you arrange a drop-off or collection.

Is the council bulky collection a good option before a move?

It can be, if you live in the Liverpool City Council area and can plan ahead. It is free for up to 5 bulky items, but items must be left outside and collections happen when the crew is next in your area, so book well before moving day. Check the current rules on liverpool.gov.uk.

Can you collect the leftover items on the same day as my move?

Often, yes. Tell us what is moving and what is going for disposal when you ask for a quote. Same-day collection is usually available, and the price is agreed before booking.

When your declutter is done, send us photos of what is left on WhatsApp or call 07743 183272 for a free quote. You can find out more on our house removals page.
