To prepare furniture for collection, empty it completely, measure it against your doorways, clear a route to the door, and flat-pack anything that comes apart easily. Then send us a few photos on WhatsApp with the sizes and access details so the quote is accurate. That is most of the work done, and it makes collection day quick for everyone.
Whether you are booking a furniture collection in Liverpool because you are moving, selling an item, or getting rid of something old, the steps below will help it go smoothly.
Empty drawers, cupboards and shelves
It sounds obvious, but it is the step people most often leave until the last minute. Furniture is designed to carry its contents when it is standing still, not when it is being tilted down a staircase.
- Take everything out of drawers, wardrobes, sideboards and bedside tables.
- Check under sofa cushions and inside sofa beds for coins, remotes and keys.
- Remove glass shelves and pack them separately with padding.
- Tape drawers and doors closed with low-tack tape so they do not swing open.
- Put loose screws, keys and fittings in a labelled bag taped to the item.
Measure the item and the way out
A quick tape-measure check saves a lot of head-scratching on the day. Measure the furniture’s height, width and depth, and then measure the route it has to take: internal doors, hallways, staircases, any tight turns and the front door.
This matters in Liverpool more than many places. Lots of homes are terraced with narrow front doors and tight back yards, and many flats have no lift. If something went in before a door frame was changed or a staircase was boxed in, it may not come out the same way. Knowing that in advance means we can plan for it rather than discovering it on the doorstep.
Clear the route to the van
Once you know which way the furniture is going, clear the path. The driver does all the lifting and loading, but a clear route makes that faster and safer.
- Move rugs, shoes, plants, bikes and pictures that are at shoulder height on the stairs.
- Prop internal doors open or take them off if they are in the way.
- Keep pets and young children in another room while items are being carried.
- Check the front path and gate are clear, especially if there are bins out.
- Think about parking. If your street is permit-only or very busy, tell us when you book so we can plan where the van will stop.
Flat-pack what you can
Flat-pack furniture is usually much easier to carry once it is back in pieces. Beds, wardrobes, desks and some tables can often be taken apart with basic tools. If you have the instructions, keep them with the parts.
If you would rather not take something apart yourself, or you are unsure whether it will come apart safely, ask about dismantling when you book and we will let you know what is possible for that item.
Protect floors, walls and the furniture itself
A little protection goes a long way, particularly with heavy or awkward pieces.
- Lay old sheets or cardboard on light carpets and wooden floors along the route.
- Wrap legs and corners of polished furniture in towels or blankets.
- Remove feet or castors that might snap off when the item is tipped.
- Wrap mirrors and glass-fronted units in blankets and mark them as fragile.
If the item is going to a new home rather than for disposal, it is also worth wiping it down and making sure it is dry, especially if it has been stored in a garage or shed.
What we need to quote your furniture collection in Liverpool
The easiest way to get an accurate quote for furniture collection in Liverpool is to send photos on WhatsApp. Our price depends on how much space the items take in the van, the type of item, access and timing, so the more we know, the more accurate it is. Please include:
| Detail | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Photos of each item | Shows the size, type and how much van space it needs |
| Rough measurements | Helps us check it will fit through doors and stairwells |
| Floor and lift access | Stairs and long carries take longer |
| Parking outside | Permit-only streets and busy roads affect access |
| Where it is going | Another address, or for reuse, recycling or disposal |
| When you need it | Same-day and overnight jobs are priced differently |
The quote is free, there is no callout charge, and the price we agree before booking does not change on the day.
A note on sofas, armchairs and other upholstered items
If you are getting rid of upholstered seating, there is one extra thing to know. The Environment Agency says waste upholstered domestic seating, such as sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, upholstered dining chairs, office chairs, footstools, futons, bean bags and cushions, is likely to contain persistent organic pollutants (POPs). It must be kept separate from other waste and incinerated rather than sent to landfill or recycled.
So please tell us when you book if an upholstered item is being disposed of rather than moved. Mattresses are not in this category, but we do charge a separate disposal cost for them, as we do for fridges, freezers and tyres. Usable furniture is passed on where possible.
If you are clearing several pieces at once, our rubbish removal service can take general household waste on the same visit.
FAQs
Do I need to empty drawers before furniture collection?
Yes, please. Full drawers make furniture much heavier, can slide open on the stairs and risk damage to the item, your walls and the contents. Empty everything out and tape drawers or doors shut if they tend to swing open.
Can I send photos for a furniture collection quote?
Yes. Send photos on WhatsApp, along with rough sizes, which floor the item is on and what parking is like outside. We will give you a free quote, and the price agreed before booking does not change on the day.
Will you take an old sofa or armchair?
Yes. Under Environment Agency rules, waste upholstered seating is likely to contain persistent organic pollutants and has to be kept separate and incinerated rather than landfilled. Let us know if a sofa or armchair is being thrown away so it can be handled correctly.
Do you dismantle furniture before collection?
If an item needs taking apart to get it out, ask about dismantling when you book and we will tell you what is possible. If you are able to flat-pack it yourself beforehand, that usually makes the job quicker.
If you have furniture to move or get rid of, have a look at our furniture removal service in Liverpool, or send photos on WhatsApp or call 07743 183272 for a free quote. Same-day collection is usually available, including evenings and weekends.
