Liverpool's man and van service

The key to stress-free student moves in Liverpool is to book your van early, decide what is coming with you and what isn’t, and leave your room clear and clean so you get your deposit back. September is our busiest month, and the end of the academic year is not far behind, so popular times go quickly.

This checklist is for students leaving halls or a shared house at the end of term, whether you are going home for the summer, moving into a new house in September or leaving Liverpool for good.

Student moves in Liverpool: when to book

Lots of students move on the same few days, both at the end of the academic year and at the start of September when new tenancies begin. If you have a fixed move-out date, book your man with a van in Liverpool as soon as you know it. A few weeks out is better than a few days.

When you get in touch, it helps to tell us:

  • the pick-up and drop-off addresses (or areas)
  • roughly how much you have: boxes, suitcases, a desk, a bike, a mini fridge
  • the floor you are on and whether there is a lift
  • any parking or loading restrictions you know about

Photos on WhatsApp are the fastest way to get a price. We agree the price before you book and it doesn’t change on the day, with no callout charge. We’re open 24 hours, 7 days a week, so an early morning or evening slot is often possible if your days are taken up with exams.

Moving out of halls vs a shared house

Halls of residence

Halls usually have set check-out times and procedures. Check your accommodation’s move-out instructions for key return, room inspections and when you need to be gone. Many city-centre halls have limited parking, and the nearest loading bays fill fast on move-out days, so let your driver know where to stop and be ready to carry down quickly.

Shared houses and HMOs

In a student house, the whole group often leaves at once. Agree a plan with your housemates for shared items, such as kitchenware, the sofa, the TV stand and cleaning, and decide who is doing the final clean. Many Liverpool student houses are terraces on permit-only streets, so check whether you need a visitor permit or can use a nearby side road.

End-of-term checklist

  1. Two to four weeks before: book the van, check your tenancy or halls move-out rules, and start using up food.
  2. Two weeks before: collect boxes, decide what you are taking, and list anything to sell, donate or get rid of.
  3. One week before: pack anything you don’t need for exams. Label boxes with your name and the room they are going to, which is useful if housemates share a van.
  4. A few days before: arrange collection of unwanted items, defrost a mini fridge if you have one, and return borrowed things.
  5. The day before: pack the last bits, clean the room, and take photos of it.
  6. Moving day: strip the bed, check every drawer and under the bed, hand back keys, and take final photos.

What to do with stuff you don’t take

Every year, rooms are left with broken desk chairs, half-used kitchen kit, old duvets and cheap furniture. Deal with it early:

  • Sell or give away anything decent to students who are staying on or arriving. Course group chats and local selling groups work well.
  • Donate clothes, books and kitchenware in good condition to charity shops. Upholstered furniture is harder, as most reuse charities need the fire safety label attached.
  • Recycle what you can in your house’s bins, following local collection days.
  • Book a collection for bulky items. If your house is within Liverpool City Council’s area, the bulky item collection is free for residents, but you may wait for the next crew visit, so book well ahead.

If there is too much for the bins and no time to wait, we can take it as a rubbish removal job, priced up front from your photos. Please don’t leave bags or furniture in the alley or on the street. It can be treated as fly-tipping, and the clear-up cost often ends up with the tenants.

Getting your deposit back: leave the room clear

Most deposit disputes at the end of a student tenancy come down to cleaning, damage and items left behind. A few habits help:

  • Compare with your check-in inventory if you had one, and put furniture back where it started.
  • Clean properly: skirting boards, inside drawers and wardrobes, windowsills, and the shared kitchen and bathroom.
  • Remove everything that is yours, including posters, Blu Tack, food in the fridge and freezer, and bottles under the sink.
  • Take dated photos and video of every room once it is empty and clean.
  • Hand back all keys and get confirmation that they have been returned.

If your deposit is in a government-backed tenancy deposit scheme and you disagree with deductions, the scheme’s dispute process is the place to raise it. GOV.UK has guidance on how tenancy deposits work.

Packing tips for a student van move

  • Use sturdy boxes for books. Heavy bags split.
  • Pack suitcases with clothes, and use bedding to wrap breakables such as a monitor or mirror.
  • Keep a bag with your laptop, chargers, ID, keys and paperwork with you, not in the van.
  • Tape cables to the item they belong to.
  • Ask when you book about anything bulky or awkward, such as a bike or a large mirror.

The driver does all the lifting and loading, and we’re fully insured for goods in transit, but well-packed boxes make for a faster, cheaper move.

FAQs

When should I book a student move in Liverpool?

As early as you know your dates. September is our busiest time of year, and the end of the academic year is busy too, as lots of students move out of halls and shared houses on the same days. Booking ahead gives you more choice of time.

Can several housemates share one van?

Yes, if you are all going to the same place or to addresses close together. Tell us how many rooms there are and where everyone is going, and we’ll quote for the whole job so you can split it.

What happens to the things I leave in my room?

Anything left behind may have to be cleared by the halls or the landlord, and the cost could come out of your deposit. Agree with housemates who is taking shared items, and arrange donation or removal before your move-out date.

Do I need to be there when the van arrives?

Someone needs to be there to let the driver in and point out what is going. Have your things packed, labelled and ready by the door so the job is quick, especially if parking near your building is limited.
